The Milton J. Hinton Scholarship Fund, Inc. (MJHSF)
In 1980, the MJHSF was created by Milt’s family and friends to honor
him on his 70th Birthday. To date, more than $200,000 has been
raised and the Fund uses the interest generated by this money to
periodically make awards to jazz bass students so they can study
with private teachers.
In addition to background information, applicants provide a plan of
study, the names of prospective instructors (along with letters from
them), a personal statement, and a short audition CD.
A panel of three or more established jazz bassists evaluates the
applicants anonymously. In addition to competence as a musician,
factors such as the applicant’s experience and potential are
considered in the selection process.
Competitions take place periodically and announcements are
made in the News section of this website. An application form and
instructions can be found in this section of the website.
